water treatment
Treatment

We take samples every day, and carry out thousands of tests a year to ensure the water is safe to drink and is of high quality.
The type of treatment used depends on the source of the water:

  • Wells:
Generally, groundwater pumped from wells is of high quality because it has been filtered through many layers of sand, and needs only disinfection by chlorination.
  • Springs:
Springs water (As-sin, Jourin) contains a range of substances, which need to be removed. What follows is a typical process at one of our water treatment works.
Primary Treatment

Water from rivers pass through screens, this is so larger solid material can be removed (such as sticks and weed carried by the river) and also prevents fish getting into the treatment process.
The water is then pumped to the main works where it can be further treated.

Sand filtration
The clean water flows through filters containing specially graded sand, which removes any suspended matter.
This sand filtered water is collected in a large tank where pumps are used to push the water into the Disinfection tanks that follow this stage.
Disinfection
Chlorine is added to disinfect the water, killing potentially harmful micro-organisms such as bacteria. It also keeps the water safe on its long journey to your tap.
Treated water storage
The treated water is pumped to conserved water storage reservoirs from where it supplies customers on demand.
Your home
The final stage in the supply chain is you the customer....quality drinking water, on tap. Water quality is monitored at each stage of the treatment process, right from the raw water, through to the water at your tap.
